EBT

EBT

EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) is a system that allows government assistance recipients in the United States to receive and spend their benefits using a plastic card similar to a standard debit card. The system was introduced in the mid‑1990s, replacing paper food stamps. This made the process of receiving aid more convenient, secure, and less stigmatizing for low‑income families. The EBT card is used to access two main types of benefits: SNAP (food assistance) and TANF (cash assistance for low‑income families with children). SNAP funds can only be spent on eligible food items (excluding alcohol, tobacco, and hot prepared meals), while TANF provides more flexibility — it can be used for clothing, gas, utilities, and other everyday needs. The EBT card is activated upon receipt, and the cardholder sets a 4‑digit PIN. Benefits are loaded onto the account monthly, typically in the first few days of the month. To make a purchase, the card is inserted or tapped (more states are switching to chip‑enabled contactless cards) and the PIN is entered. The card is accepted at most grocery stores, supermarkets, farmers' markets, and some online retailers, including Amazon and Walmart. Unused funds automatically roll over to the next month but may be forfeited after a long period of inactivity (usually 9–12 months). Cardholders can check their balance, change their PIN, block their card, and track transactions through mobile apps such as ebtEDGE or ConnectEBT. It is recommended to change your PIN regularly and never share it with anyone, as electronic fraud (skimming and phishing) has become increasingly common. Although SNAP follows nationwide guidelines, the program is administered at the state level, so details such as deposit dates and eligibility requirements may vary by state.
