Bank of America
United States of America (USA)
Bank of America Corporation (Bank of America) is one of the world's largest financial institutions and the second‑largest bank in the United States by assets, after JPMorgan Chase. The bank is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bank of America's roots date back to the early 20th century: its key predecessor was the Bank of Italy, founded in 1904 in San Francisco by Amadeo Giannini to serve immigrants and working‑class individuals who were denied services by larger banks. In 1930, the Bank of Italy was renamed Bank of America, and through a series of mergers — most notably with NationsBank in 1998 — the modern corporation took shape. Today, Bank of America is designated as a Global Systemically Important Bank (G‑SIB) and is considered one of the "Big Four" U.S. banks, alongside JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo.
The bank offers a full range of financial services through several key divisions. Consumer Banking is the largest retail arm, serving millions of individual clients through branches, ATMs, and digital channels, offering checking and savings accounts, credit and debit cards, mortgages, auto loans, and personal loans. Global Wealth & Investment Management (GWIM) includes the Merrill (formerly Merrill Lynch) and Private Bank brands, serving affluent clients with wealth management, brokerage services, retirement planning, and fiduciary management. Global Banking provides corporate and investment banking services, including lending to large businesses, trade finance, liquidity management, as well as mergers and acquisitions, equity and debt issuance. Global Markets handles trading, foreign exchange, derivatives, and risk hedging for institutional clients.
Bank of America operates in more than 35 countries worldwide, but its primary focus is on the U.S. market, where it serves approximately 68 million consumer and small business clients. The bank manages one of the largest branch and ATM networks in the United States and is a leader in digital banking, with tens of millions of active mobile app users. Bank of America is actively involved in financing green energy, sustainable development, and social projects, having committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its operational activities. In Russia, the bank has no retail presence, and its corporate presence was significantly restricted after 2022 due to sanctions and the bank's global strategy.
