Card Mir

Card Mir

Mir is the Russian national payment system, launched in 2014–2015 as an independent alternative to international payment systems. The system is operated by the National Card Payment System (NSPK, JSC). Mir cards are accepted throughout the entire territory of Russia — from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok — in retail stores, pharmacies, restaurants, gas stations, public transport (including metro and ground transit), and online services. The Mir card is mandatory for receiving government payments, including pensions, scholarships, child benefits, salaries of public sector employees, and social benefits for eligible citizens. All banks serving retail customers in Russia are required to accept and issue Mir cards nationwide. Key features of Mir cards: Full coverage across Russia — the card works in every region of the country, including remote and rural areas. Security — uses Russian cryptographic protection and tokenization systems (including contactless payments via Mir Pay). Government payments — by law, this is the only card for receiving budget and social benefits. Technology — supports contactless payments through smartphones (Mir Pay, SberPay, and initially some compatibility with Apple Pay and Samsung Pay on certain devices; now predominantly Mir Pay and SberPay). Co‑badging programs — dual cards with international systems (e.g., Mir‑Maestro, Mir‑JCB, Mir‑UnionPay) for travel abroad. Loyalty programs — Mir cards are eligible for promotions and cashback programs offered by most Russian issuing banks. Mir cards are available in several types: standard Mir, Mir Premium, Mir‑Maestro, Mir‑UnionPay (for travelers), as well as specialized cards for pensioners and students/young adults.
