HSBC Holdings plc (HSBC) is one of the world's largest banking and financial services organizations, headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The bank's name stands for The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, reflecting its historical origins. HSBC was founded in 1865 in Hong Kong (then a British colony) to finance trade between China, India, and Europe. HSBC's business is divided into several core divisions. Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB) serves affluent individuals and retail customers, offering bank accounts, credit cards, mortgages, investment products, insurance, and wealth management. Commercial Banking (CMB) focuses on small, medium, and large businesses, providing cash management, lending, trade finance, and treasury services. Global Banking and Markets (GBM) handles investment banking, securities trading, mergers and acquisitions, foreign exchange operations, as well as hedging and risk management services for institutional clients and governments.
HSBC operates in more than 60 countries and territories worldwide, with particularly strong positions in the Asia‑Pacific region, Europe, and North America. The bank serves approximately 40 million customers globally, including individuals, corporations, governments, and international organizations. In Russia, HSBC operated from the late 19th century and resumed activities in the 1990s, providing services to large corporate clients and foreign investors. After 2022, HSBC announced a phased withdrawal from Russia as part of its global strategy and in response to sanctions, retaining only limited operations to service existing obligations.
