BNP Paribas
France
BNP Paribas is one of the world's largest banks and a leading financial institution in Europe. The bank was formed in 2000 through the merger of two French banking groups — Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) and Paribas — although the roots of its predecessors date back to the 19th century. Today, BNP Paribas is headquartered in Paris and ranks among the global systemically important financial institutions (G‑SIBs) alongside giants such as JPMorgan Chase, HSBC, and Deutsche Bank.
BNP Paribas offers a full range of financial services through three core business divisions. The Commercial, Personal Banking & Services (CPBS) division covers retail banking in France, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, and through subsidiary networks in other regions, including BGL BNP Paribas (Luxembourg) and BNL (Italy). The Investment & Protection Services (IPS) division focuses on insurance, wealth management, and pension programs. The Corporate & Institutional Banking (CIB) division provides global investment and corporate banking services, including capital markets, trade finance, treasury services, mergers and acquisitions, as well as securities and derivatives operations.
BNP Paribas operates in more than 65 countries worldwide, serving approximately 30 million retail clients, corporations, institutional investors, and government entities. The bank is traditionally strong in Europe, particularly in France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, and Central and Eastern Europe. In Russia, BNP Paribas operated from the 1860s until the 1917 revolution and then returned to the market in the 1990s. After 2022, the bank announced the suspension of active operations in Russia due to sanctions restrictions, while maintaining a limited presence to fulfill existing obligations.
